Hatching Chick

Supplies

  • White paper
  • Watercolor
  • Markers
  • Glue
  • Popsicle stick

Recipe for Creativity

  1. First, fold three pieces of paper together in half and cut out a large oval making two identical paper egg-shaped ovals.
  2. On one of the cut-out ovals, cut a zig zag line, about a 1/3 from the top. (This will be where the chick will pop out).
  3. Using one of the other ovals, cut out a small chick. Start by drawing an upside down U, for the head. For two wings, draw zig-zags, or a funny W on either side of the chick’s head.
  4. Now its time to decorate! Using your watercolors/markers let your creativity run wild! Draw flowers, polka dots, lines or zig zags. Give your little chick some feathers, eyes, and a beak.
  5. Once the paint is dry, glue the popsicle stick to the back of your baby chick.
  6. Take the bottom of the cracked egg and glue it onto the whole egg (the third oval). Leave a small space at the very bottom for the popsicle stick to slide through.
  7. Take the top half of the cracked egg and glue it to the head of your baby chick.
  8. Now we are almost finished, just slide the chick inside the egg letting the popsicle stick come out the bottom. Now your chick can pop up and down, hatching out of its beautifully decorated egg.

Fun Fact!

Did you know an egg standing on end can bear up to 130 pounds without breaking!? And yet a tiny little chick can break through using just its small beak.

Discussion Questions

  1. What do you think about baby chicks having one tooth that’s called an egg tooth?
  2. If baby chicks could fly where do you think they would go?
  3. What if I told you chickens were descendants of dinosaurs?

The key to everything is patience. You get the chick by letting it hatch, not by smashing the egg.

Pollito de Incubadora

Suministros

  • Papel blanco
  • Acuarela
  • Pegamento
  • Palito de paleta

Receta Para la Creatividad
